Chantry and Pottergate go to £22.90 all day, season tickets rise 3.2 per cent, and one charge falls by 10p. Every council car park tariff, before and after.
Parking in a Norwich City Council car park gets more expensive on Monday 21 September, under a statutory notice the council published on 21 August.
Most of the rises are small, between 10p and 50p on a daily tariff. Season tickets go up by more, about 3.2 per cent across every category. One charge actually falls. And Rose Lane multi-storey gains a weekend long-stay rate it has never offered.
The notice varies the City of Norwich Council (Off Street Parking Places) Order 2008 under section 35C of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. It is signed by Nicholas Austin, the council’s executive director of climate and environment. Car parks left out of the notice keep their current charges.
The all-day picture
The split that already defines parking in Norwich gets slightly wider. Four car parks charge more than £22 for a stay over five hours. Four charge under £8. From 21 September the cheapest all-day option, St Crispins at £7.40, sits £15.50 below Chantry and Pottergate at £22.90.

Three things stand out in that table.
Monastery Court is the only charge in the whole notice that goes down. Its three-hour rate drops from £7.40 to £7.30. Nothing else in it moves, so the Elm Hill car park ends up 30p cheaper than Chantry and Pottergate at three hours, having matched them exactly before.
St Giles multi-storey holds every daily rate. Its 1 to 5 hour bands and its £16.40 all-day charge are unchanged. Only the evening charge moves, from £3.30 to £3.40.
The first hour still barely varies. It is £2.30 or £2.50 today and £2.30 or £2.60 from 21 September. Where the city gets expensive is the long stay, and it is worth knowing that before you pull in.
Rose Lane gets a weekend all-day rate
Rose Lane multi-storey is priced on two clocks, and the notice treats them differently.
Between Monday 6pm and Friday 6am, the only change is the over-five-hours charge, from £8.70 to £9.00. Everything else stays: £2.20 for an hour, £4.10 for two, £5.50 for three, £7.90 for four and £8.10 for five.
Between Friday 6am and Monday 6pm, the same 1 to 5 hour prices apply, but the notice adds two bands that do not exist in the current schedule:
- up to 12 hours: £9.00
- 12 to 24 hours: £10.00
That is the one genuinely new product in the notice. A weekend visitor who wants to leave a car in the city overnight currently has no published tariff for it at Rose Lane; from 21 September there is one, and £10 for up to 24 hours is the cheapest long stay of anything in the document.
Season tickets go up by about 3.2 per cent
The steadier rises are in the season tickets, and they are uniform. Every 12 month price in the notice rises between 3.20 and 3.28 per cent.

The notice gives Level 1 as Barn Road, Rouen Road, Magdalen Street and Westwick Street, and Level 2 as those plus Queens Road and Colegate.
A year at St Giles on a seven-day ticket goes from £4,190.87 to £4,325.00, a rise of £134.13. A Monday to Friday ticket for the Level 1 surface car parks goes from £1,417.62 to £1,463.00, up £45.38.
Three and six month tickets move by the same proportion. A three month Monday to Friday ticket at St Andrews goes from £352.02 to £370.00, at Rose Lane from £320.69 to £336.00, and for Level 2 from £472.34 to £493.00. The notice prints the new three month St Giles Monday to Friday price as “£7,78.00”, with a stray comma; the figure it means is £778.00, up from £748.37.
One further quirk is worth knowing before you budget. The council’s own season ticket page currently lists a three month Monday to Friday ticket at Rose Lane as £748.37, which is the St Giles price on the same page. The statutory notice puts the existing Rose Lane price at £320.69. The same page prints the six month Level 2 Monday to Sunday price as “£1,322,35” rather than £1,322.35. If you are comparing, the notice is the legal document.
What it means for you
- If you park all day, the choice matters more than it did. From 21 September St Crispins is £7.40 and Chantry is £22.90 for the same stay. Chantry is a few minutes’ walk from Chapel Field East, so the difference is convenience, not distance.
- Short stays barely move. An hour goes up by 10p at Chantry and Pottergate and nowhere else. Two hours goes up by 10p at the same two.
- Nothing changes before 21 September. Charges displayed on machines until then are the existing ones.
- If your season ticket renews after 21 September, budget about 3.2 per cent more.
- A weekend car left overnight now has a price at Rose Lane, £10.00 for 12 to 24 hours between Friday 6am and Monday 6pm.
- Park and ride is unchanged. It is £3 an adult, £2 for 5 to 19 year olds and concessions, £4 for two and £5 for a group of up to five, with free parking at the site.
